On inaugural week it is a wonderful time to comment on these words from The Decoration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson:
Do these words have a spiritual meaning too?
Now it is rumored that besides having a political meaning, these words have a spiritual meaning too. I think that the founders of the United States had a good understanding of Self-Knowledge. That’s because in order to get to the essence of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness a person has to look within, to know his or her self.
This is not based on some conspiracy theory where the founders were trying to introduce some weird energy into government. It is based on knowledge, and the unique characteristic of knowledge is that it is straightforward and understandable.
Why look within?
So you might ask: “Why do you have to look within to find life, liberty, and happiness?” In order to get a sense of this you have to look to the actual place where you experience life, liberty, and happiness. Mind you, not the place where you are supposed to experience these things, but the place where you actually do experience them.
If you were to believe the advertisements that you see: if you only get the new house, new car, new ipod, xbox, new computer, husband, or wife then you will gain the happiness and freedom that you want. But when you get that car you have to admit that we don’t really experience happiness in the car ― you experience it right in your own heart. If you look carefully, I think you will find that your heart was the cause of the happiness ― not the car. At the most, the car can remind you of what you have already and just overlooked.
You experience happiness over here, not over there!
Moreover the car is over there, right? I never heard anyone say, “I feel lots of happiness over there.” No, they experience the happiness right here ― right in the place where they actually stand.
Once you discover that happiness and freedom come from the inside you will find two other advantages:
First, if the car or the house gets destroyed or goes away, your happiness does not have to go away. You will realize that your happiness comes from a much deeper source than any object that you see.
Second, you will not pursue objects with the vain hope of getting what they just can’t deliver: the happiness that you have already. Greed comes when you think more objects will deliver more happiness. But I haven’t seen it. The rich people that I know are not happier than the poor people who know themselves and are at peace. In fact many of the rich people that I know seem quite agitated. Perhaps they intuitively know that they are on a futile path.
What are inalienable Rights?
Now you may be wondering about another part of this quote: “endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights.” What could that possibly mean? Well inalienable means unchallengeable absolute rights. How could these rights come from the creator?
When God created the universe he couldn’t first go to the lumber store and then to the hardware store, right? He could not hire a bunch of contractors and get to work. That’s because none of these things existed yet. So where did the stuff of the universe come from?
It had to come from God, right? So nothing that we perceive can be separate from the one God. If this seems strange to you, last night’s dream can hold a clue. Each character in the dream may have thought that they were separate. But when you wake up you see that the dream was not really made of separate characters. It was made of the one mind and that’s what you were too.
When you begin to look within to your own self-nature you will be in for a big surprise. The world that you thought was out there is really in here. Not only is the material God; but the very principles that make up this world like the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness come from God. These desires are really our desire to return to the source which is our true home. It is to return to the one infinite being that we really are.
Not created they can never be destroyed
I hope that you can now see that the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness only seems to come from governments. They really come from looking within. There you will find that these rights were never created and that they can never be destroyed. They are just what you are. When you find them, you will have returned to your real home. This is the meaning of inalienable Rights.
